If you are looking for a 2AR engine for sale, your Camry, RAV4, Scion tC or Alphard is probably parked with a knock, heavy oil use, a cracked block after overheating, or damage from an accident. These are popular cars that hold their value, and putting a good engine in is usually much cheaper than replacing the vehicle.
We are NJ Global Auto Parts. We sell used and rebuilt Toyota engines and ship them to buyers all over the world. This guide is what we tell people who call us about a 2AR engine for sale: specs, which cars use it, common faults, how we test, costs, shipping and fitting tips.
If you already know what you need, our 2AR engine product page is the quickest way to get a quote.
What You Get With a 2AR Engine for Sale
The 2AR-FE is Toyota’s 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine from the AR family. It arrived around 2009 and took over from the 2.4 litre 2AZ-FE in the Camry, RAV4 and several other models. It is an all-aluminium engine with a timing chain, twin cams, Dual VVT-i on both camshafts and balance shafts to keep it smooth.
Compared with the 2AZ it replaced, the 2AR makes more power, uses less fuel and does not have the same oil burning reputation. That is a big reason people look for a 2AR engine for sale. They want the same reliable engine back, and they know it is worth fixing the car rather than scrapping it.
There are also hybrid versions, called 2AR-FXE, used in the Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and Lexus ES 300h. They share a lot with the 2AR-FE but are not a direct swap. More on that below.

For background on the whole engine family, the Toyota AR engine page covers the 1AR, 2AR and the hybrid versions.

Cars That Use the 2AR Engine
Before you choose a 2AR engine for sale, check that it matches your car. The 2AR-FE was used in:
- Toyota Camry (XV40 from around 2009, and XV50 from 2012)
- Toyota RAV4 (XA30 2.5 from around 2009, and XA40)
- Scion tC (second generation, 2011 onward)
- Toyota Alphard and Vellfire 2.5 (selected years and markets)
- Toyota Aurion and other regional models in some markets
The 2AR-FXE hybrid engine was used in the Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES 300h, Lexus NX 300h and others.
The intake, wiring, sensors, sump and accessories can differ between a Camry, RAV4 and Scion. The core is the same, but it is easiest to buy the engine your car came with. Send your VIN through the contact page and we will match it.
Camry, RAV4 and Scion Engines: What Is Different
People often ask whether a 2AR from one car will fit another. The block, head, crank and pistons are shared, so a long block can move between models. The parts bolted to it are where the differences show up.
Intake manifold and throttle body. Shapes and sensor positions vary to suit each engine bay.
Oil pan. All-wheel drive RAV4 models and front-wheel drive Camry models can use different sump shapes.
Engine mounts and brackets. These are specific to each car.
Wiring and computer. Immobiliser, transmission type and model year all affect this.
Exhaust manifold. Different shapes and catalytic converter positions.
So if you find a good long block from a different model, it can work. You just move your own intake, sump, brackets and wiring over. If you want the easiest fitting, ask us for a 2AR engine for sale that came out of the same model and year as yours.
2AR-FE vs 2AR-FXE: Do Not Mix Them Up
This is one of the most common mistakes we see. Someone with a petrol Camry buys a hybrid engine because it looks the same and costs less, or the other way round.
The 2AR-FXE runs on the Atkinson cycle with a higher compression ratio, different cams, an electric water pump, no normal belt-driven accessories and different engine management tied to the hybrid system. It will not drop into a normal petrol car, and a petrol 2AR-FE will not run a hybrid system.
When you ask for a 2AR engine for sale, tell us whether your car is petrol or hybrid. We will make sure you get the right one.
What Comes With Our 2AR Engine for Sale
Every quote for a 2AR engine for sale lists exactly what is included. Most buyers choose one of these:
- Long block: block, head, crank, pistons, cams and timing chain. You move your own intake and accessories over.
- Complete engine: long block plus intake manifold, injectors, coils, sensors and throttle body. Alternator and starter on request.
- Engine and transmission: useful if the gearbox is also worn or damaged.
- Half-cut or front clip: on request, with engine, gearbox, wiring and computer together.

How We Check Every 2AR Engine for Sale
A shiny engine can still be a bad engine. This is the checklist every 2AR engine for sale goes through with us before it is listed.
1. Compression test on all four cylinders
We want strong, even readings. A low cylinder points to rings, valves or a head gasket.
2. Oil and coolant check
Milky oil, oil in the coolant, metal flakes or a burnt smell is a fail.
3. Timing chain and VVT check
We look at the chain, guides and tensioner where we can, and listen for VVT rattle when the engine can be run.
4. Turn it over by hand
It should rotate smoothly with no tight spots or knocking.
5. Water pump and seals
We look for coolant traces around the pump and oil leaks at the timing cover and rear main seal.
6. Visual inspection
Cracks, broken mounts, damaged sensors and connectors, and signs of overheating.
7. Photos and video
You see the exact engine you are buying. Video on request.
Common 2AR Problems and What We Watch For
Knowing the weak spots helps you judge any 2AR engine for sale, from us or anyone else.
VVT-i rattle on cold start. A short grinding or rattling noise for a second or two when the engine starts cold. It usually comes from the intake cam VVT gear. It is a known issue, and Toyota released updated parts. It is annoying but usually not fatal.
Water pump leaks. A common wear item. Look for pink crust around the pump. Replace it when fitting the engine.
Oil leaks at the timing cover. Sealant along the timing cover can seep with age.
Overheating damage. Like any aluminium engine, the 2AR does not like overheating. A failed fan, low coolant or a leaking radiator can warp the head or damage the block.
Worn engine mounts. Very common on Camry and RAV4. Old mounts cause vibration at idle that feels like an engine problem.
Accident damage. Many 2AR engines need replacing after a front-end crash cracks the block, sump or timing cover.
None of these make the 2AR a bad engine. It is one of Toyota’s better four-cylinders of that era.
Signs You Need a Replacement Engine
Not every problem needs a new engine, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a 2AR engine for sale you do not need. Here is how we usually tell the difference.
- Knocking from the bottom end that gets louder with revs. Usually bearings. That engine is finished.
- Coolant in the oil or white smoke that will not stop. Head gasket or a cracked head or block.
- Low compression on two or more cylinders. Worn rings or valves.
- Heavy oil use with blue smoke. Worn rings, often from overheating or neglect.
- Seized after overheating or running out of oil.
- A cracked block or timing cover after an accident.
If you are not sure, send us a short video or a description of the problem. We will give you an honest answer.
Used or Rebuilt: Which 2AR Engine for Sale Is Right for You?
Choosing between a used and rebuilt 2AR engine for sale comes down to budget and how long you plan to keep the car.
Used is right if you want the lowest price and a quick repair. A tested, clean, lower mileage engine is our most common sale for Camry and RAV4 owners.
Rebuilt is right if you plan to keep the car for many years or use it for taxi or ride-share work, where the kilometres add up fast. A rebuild gets new rings, bearings, gaskets and seals, and the head is checked and machined if needed.
We can quote both so you can see the numbers side by side.
2AR vs 2AZ: Should You Upgrade?
Some owners of older Camry and RAV4 models with the 2.4 litre 2AZ-FE ask about fitting a 2AR. It can be done, but it is not a simple bolt-in. The mounts, wiring, computer and exhaust differ. For most people, it is cheaper and easier to replace a 2AZ with another 2AZ. Our 2AZ-FE buyer’s guide covers that engine.
If your car came with a 2AR, stay with a 2AR engine for sale. It is the simplest and most reliable path.
Fleet, Taxi and Workshop Orders
A lot of Camry and RAV4 cars work as taxis, ride-share cars, rentals and company vehicles. They cover big distances, and when an engine fails, every day off the road costs money. If you run a fleet or a workshop, we can help in a few ways.
- Batch orders. Several engines in one shipment cost less to ship per unit.
- Consistent quality. We match mileage and condition across the batch as closely as we can.
- Mixed loads. Engines, gearboxes and tyres together in one container. Our new tires buying guide explains what we supply on the tire side.
- Standing orders. Regular shipments on a schedule that suits your workload.
Tell us how many cars you look after and which models, and we will put together a 2AR engine for sale package that fits your budget.
How Much Does a 2AR Engine for Sale Cost?
The price of a 2AR engine for sale depends on:
- Version: petrol or hybrid, and the model it came from.
- Mileage and condition.
- What is included: long block or complete.
- Used or rebuilt.
- Shipping: sea is cheaper, air is faster.
Be careful with very cheap engines. A low price often hides overheating, accident damage or missing parts. Ask what was tested and ask for photos.

Questions to Ask Any Seller Before You Pay
Whether you buy from us or anyone else, ask these about any 2AR engine for sale:
- Is it a 2AR-FE or a 2AR-FXE, and what car did it come from?
- What are the compression numbers on all four cylinders?
- What is the mileage, and how do you know?
- Has it ever overheated or been in an accident?
- What exactly is included?
- Can I see photos of this exact engine?
- What happens if it arrives damaged?
If you do not get clear answers, keep looking. A 2AR engine for sale with real photos, test results and a written parts list is the one worth paying for.
Worldwide Shipping on Every 2AR Engine for Sale
We ship engines to buyers around the world. Most go by sea because it is the cheapest way to move a heavy part. Air freight is there when you need it fast.

- We send tracking and shipping documents once it leaves.
- You or your clearing agent handle customs at your end.
Duties and taxes vary by country, so ask your local customs office first. The World Customs Organization has general information on customs. Our shipping policy explains packing and delivery.

Real Jobs We Have Helped With
To give you an idea of who buys a 2AR engine for sale from us, here are a few typical cases, with details kept general.
A taxi operator with a Camry that had covered huge kilometres and started burning oil after a coolant leak went unnoticed. He chose a rebuilt engine because the car does long shifts every day, fitted a new radiator and water pump with it, and kept the car working.
A RAV4 owner whose engine was damaged in a front-end crash. The block and timing cover were cracked, but the rest of the car was repaired. A clean used 2AR from a RAV4 of the same year bolted straight in.
A small garage that fixes several Camry and RAV4 cars each month. They order long blocks in batches to save on shipping, and swap their customers’ own intake and accessories across.
Different jobs, same idea: match the version, check the engine properly and fix whatever killed the old one before the new one goes in.
Fitting Tips That Save You Money
Even the best 2AR engine for sale can be let down by a rushed install. These are the things we tell every buyer:
- Fit a new water pump and thermostat. Cheap parts that protect the new engine.
- Flush the cooling system and use Toyota-type long life coolant.
- Replace the engine mounts if they are worn.
- Change the oil and filter before first start. Most 2AR engines use 0W-20.
- Fit new spark plugs and check the coils.
- Clean the throttle body and let the computer relearn idle.
- Check for codes after the first drive.
For official model information, the Toyota global website is a good place to start.
Break-In and Maintenance
- Drive gently for the first 500 km and vary your speed.
- Change the oil and filter at about 1,000 km.
- Watch the temperature gauge closely at first.
- Change oil every 8,000 to 10,000 km with good synthetic oil, sooner for taxi or dusty use.
- Check coolant level regularly.
One more tip: if the old engine failed from overheating, find out why before the new one goes in. A cracked radiator, a dead fan or a slow coolant leak will hurt the replacement just as fast. Do that and a good 2AR will keep going for a long time. We have customers who bought a 2AR engine for sale from us and have put well over 100,000 km on it since.
