The L5P is the newest and strongest Duramax yet. It makes big torque, it tows like nothing before it, and it fixed the fuel pump worry that hung over the LML. It’s also an expensive engine to replace new. If your 2017 or later Silverado or Sierra HD needs one, we have a Duramax L5P engine for sale, tested, matched to your VIN and shipped to buyers anywhere in the world.
Ready to buy? See the price, photos and stock for our fairly used Duramax L5P engine for sale in the shop.
We’re an engine supplier, and a Duramax L5P engine for sale is one of the most requested diesels we handle, mostly by owners and shops who need a newer truck back to work fast. If you already know what you need, send your VIN through our contact page or browse the Chevy engines in our shop.

This guide covers the specs, the trucks it fits, the differences between early and late engines, the emissions system, the weak spots, how we test, and how buying from us works.

Why a Duramax L5P Engine for Sale Makes Sense
GM introduced the L5P for the 2017 model year. It wasn’t just an update of the LML. Around eighty percent of the engine was new, including the block, heads, fuel system, turbo and controls. Power jumped to 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft, and later trucks went even higher.
The fuel system was the other big story. The LML’s Bosch CP4 pump had a habit of failing and spreading metal through the whole system. The L5P switched to a Denso HP4 pump that has held up much better. For owners, that’s a big deal.
Newer trucks are expensive to replace, and a lot of them still have years of payments left. When the engine fails out of warranty, a tested Duramax L5P engine for sale costs a fraction of a new truck, and a fraction of a new engine from a dealer.
Duramax L5P Engine Specifications
These are the figures that matter when you compare any Duramax L5P engine for sale. For the full Duramax story, the Duramax V8 engine article on Wikipedia is a good overview.
| Engine type | 90-degree V8 turbo diesel, OHV, 4 valves per cylinder |
| Displacement | 6.6 litres (402 cubic inches) |
| Bore x stroke | 103 mm x 99 mm |
| Compression ratio | 16.0:1 |
| Block and heads | Cast iron block (new design), aluminium cylinder heads |
| Fuel system | Denso high-pressure common rail with HP4 pump |
| Turbocharger | Electronically controlled variable geometry turbo |
| Horsepower | 445 hp (2017 to 2023), 470 hp (2024 on) |
| Torque | 910 lb-ft (2017 to 2023), 975 lb-ft (2024 on) |
| Emissions equipment | Cooled EGR, diesel particulate filter, SCR with DEF |
| Oil capacity | About 10 quarts with filter |
| Transmissions | Allison 1000 6-speed (2017 to 2019), Allison 10-speed (2020 on) |
Those torque numbers put the L5P right with the best diesels on the market, and a lot of that comes from the stronger block and much higher injection pressure.
Which Trucks Use the L5P?
- 2017 and later Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD
- 2017 and later GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD
The GMC Sierra and Silverado HD pickups account for almost every L5P out there. GM’s medium-duty Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD use a closely related engine with a different code and tune, so it isn’t a direct match for a pickup. If that’s what you run, send us your VIN before ordering a Duramax L5P engine for sale.
The easiest way to confirm your engine is the Service Parts Identification label, usually in the glovebox, which lists the L5P code. Or just send us the VIN and we’ll check it for you.
Early L5P vs 2024 and Later
GM updated the L5P for the 2024 model year. The later engine makes 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft and uses a revised turbo, updated fuel system parts and different calibrations, plus changes to the emissions hardware. The 2020 model year also brought the ten-speed Allison and a new truck body.
These changes mean early and late engines don’t simply swap. The computer, wiring, turbo and some sensors differ. When you buy a Duramax L5P engine for sale, the model year of the donor truck matters, so we always match it to yours.
L5P vs LML vs LMM
- LMM (2007.5 to 2010): CP3 pump, DPF, no DEF. See our Duramax LMM engine guide.
- LML (2011 to 2016): CP4 pump, DPF and DEF. See our Duramax LML engine page.
- L5P (2017 on): New block and heads, Denso HP4 pump, much more power, full emissions system.
None of these swap straight across without major work. If you own an older truck, look at the right guide for your engine. For the earliest Duramax trucks, see the Duramax LB7 engine.
The Emissions System
The L5P carries the full modern diesel emissions setup: cooled EGR, a diesel particulate filter, and selective catalytic reduction using DEF. That’s a lot of sensors, heaters and parts, and it’s where many of the L5P’s day-to-day problems come from, not the engine itself.
NOx sensors, DEF heaters, DEF pumps and particulate sensors can all fail and put the truck into reduced power. That’s frustrating, but it’s not an engine failure. Before you buy a Duramax L5P engine for sale, make sure the problem really is inside the engine. We’d rather tell you to fix a sensor than sell you an engine you don’t need.
Rules on emissions equipment vary from country to country, and in many places removing it from a road vehicle is illegal. We sell the engine and tell you what’s attached. Keeping your truck legal where you live is up to you.
Known L5P Weak Spots
Emissions sensors and DEF parts
As above, the most common source of warning lights and reduced power.
EGR system
The EGR valve and cooler can clog with soot, and coolers can leak coolant.
Fuel contamination
The HP4 is tougher than the CP4, but water and dirt still damage any high-pressure system. Fuel filters and the water separator matter.
Injectors
Some high-mileage or contaminated-fuel engines have injector problems. They’re expensive, so we note their condition on every quote.
Turbo actuator
The electronic actuator on the variable turbo can fail and cause boost codes.
The core of the engine, block, crank, rods and heads, is very strong. Most L5Ps we see that need replacing were damaged by dust, coolant loss, overheating, contaminated fuel or a failed injector.
How We Test Every Duramax L5P Engine for Sale
Every Duramax L5P engine for sale we list goes through these checks:
- Compression or leak-down on all eight cylinders
- Blow-by check
- Oil inspection for fuel, coolant or metal
- Turbo shaft play and actuator condition
- Look at the intake tract for dust or oil
- EGR cooler check for coolant leaks
- Inspection for leaks at the rear main and front cover
- Crank rotation by hand to feel for binding
- Mileage records and the donor VIN where we have them
You get photos of the actual engine and the results with your quote. Our page on tested used engines explains each test.
Used, Remanufactured or New?
Used
Pulled from a donor truck, tested and sold with a warranty. A used Duramax L5P engine for sale is by far the cheapest way to get a newer truck back on the road, and it often comes with injectors, pump and turbo fitted.
Remanufactured
Machined and rebuilt to spec. Expensive, and often supplied without the fuel system or turbo.
New from the dealer
The most expensive option by a long way, and wait times can be long.
Our replacement engine cost guide shows how the total usually works out.
7 Checks Before You Buy Any Duramax L5P Engine for Sale
1. Match the model year
2017 to 2019, 2020 to 2023 and 2024 on all have differences. Match the Duramax L5P engine for sale to your truck’s year.
2. Confirm it’s a pickup engine
Medium-duty versions use a different code and tune.
3. Make sure the engine is actually the problem
Many L5P warning lights are emissions sensors, not engine damage.
4. Get compression numbers
Real numbers for all eight cylinders.
5. Ask about the fuel system
Any history of contaminated fuel or injector replacement?
6. Read the warranty
Our used engine warranty article explains what a fair warranty should cover.
7. Confirm what’s included
Injectors, HP4 pump, turbo, EGR parts, harness? Get it on the quote.
What Comes With Our Duramax L5P Engine for Sale
Our L5P engines usually ship complete or as a long block with the main parts fitted. Every Duramax L5P engine for sale comes with a written list of what’s attached. A typical complete engine includes:
- Block, heads and rotating assembly
- Injectors and fuel rails (condition noted)
- HP4 high-pressure pump
- Variable geometry turbocharger and actuator
- Intake, EGR valve and cooler
- Valve covers, oil pan and front cover
The DPF, SCR system, computer, harness and transmission aren’t included unless agreed in writing.
Signs Your L5P Is Finished
- A knock from the bottom end
- Heavy blow-by and oil pushed out of the breather
- Low compression on one or more cylinders
- Metal in the oil or filter
- Coolant disappearing with no outside leak
- A cylinder damaged by a failed injector
If you’ve got one of these, a Duramax L5P engine for sale is usually cheaper and quicker than a rebuild. Machine work and parts on a modern Duramax add up fast.
The Allison Behind It
2017 to 2019 trucks use the six-speed Allison 1000. 2020 and later use the ten-speed Allison. Check the transmission over while the engine is out. We also sell the Allison 1000 transmission for the earlier trucks, and our Allison 1000 guide explains what to check.
Towing With an L5P
This is what the L5P was built for. It pulls heavy fifth-wheels and goosenecks without breaking a sweat. Long hauls with a trailer also help the emissions system run clean, because the exhaust stays hot. Keep the cooling stack clean, watch temperatures on long climbs, and use clean fuel. Do that and a Duramax L5P engine for sale will tow just like the original did.
Fuel Quality and Filtration
High-pressure common-rail systems hate water and dirt. Change fuel filters on time, drain the water separator, and add extra filtration if you buy fuel in places where quality varies. If the old engine failed because of contaminated fuel or a failed injector, flush the tank and lines and check the rails before the new engine goes in. It’s the cheapest insurance for a Duramax L5P engine for sale.
Running Costs After the Swap
Plan on oil changes as the truck’s oil life monitor suggests, fuel filters on schedule, coolant checked and changed at the right interval, a clean air filter, and DEF. Keep the DEF fresh and stored properly, because contaminated DEF damages the SCR system. None of this is unusual for a modern diesel, and it’s far cheaper than replacing the truck.
Keeping Heat Under Control
Dirt and bugs packed between the coolers and radiator cut cooling badly. Clean the stack every season, use the correct coolant and keep it fresh, and watch temperatures when towing. These habits keep any Duramax running past 300,000 miles.
Fleet and Commercial Trucks
Many L5P trucks work for companies as service trucks, flatbeds and plow trucks. Downtime costs real money, so fleets often keep a spare engine ready. A Duramax L5P engine for sale on the shelf means one failure doesn’t park a truck for weeks. Ask about buying more than one, because shipping engines together lowers the freight cost per engine.
Engine Swap or New Truck?
When a newer diesel truck loses its engine out of warranty, a lot of owners assume the truck is done. Usually it isn’t. A late-model Chevrolet Silverado HD with a good body, frame, interior and transmission is still worth a lot of money. Replacing it means a big loan or a big cheque. A tested Duramax L5P engine for sale plus installation usually costs a fraction of that, and you keep a truck you already know. Run the numbers before you trade it in at a loss.
Tuning and Power Upgrades
The L5P has a strong bottom end and responds to tuning, but its computer is harder to access than older Duramax engines, and any tuning that touches emissions controls is illegal on road vehicles in many countries. If you’re thinking about more power, check your local rules first. Whatever you decide, tell us your plans before you order. We’ll help you pick a Duramax L5P engine for sale that suits them, and we’ll be honest if a particular engine isn’t the right base.
Engine Problem or Emissions Problem?
We said it earlier, but it’s worth repeating because it saves people a lot of money. Reduced power mode, a check engine light and a DEF warning on an L5P are very often caused by a sensor, a DEF heater, a clogged DPF or an EGR fault. None of those need a new engine. Get a proper diagnosis with a scan tool first. If compression is good and there’s no knock, no metal and no coolant loss, you probably don’t need a Duramax L5P engine for sale at all. If the engine really is damaged, we’re here.
What Affects the Price
- Model year (newer engines cost more)
- Mileage and history
- Complete engine or long block
- Injector, HP4 and turbo condition
- Shipping distance
A very cheap Duramax L5P engine for sale with no photos and no test results is a gamble. With injectors this expensive, compare what’s included, not just the price.
Putting an L5P in Something Else
L5P swaps are less common than older Duramax swaps because of the complex electronics and emissions hardware, but builders do it. You’ll need the engine computer, harness and a lot of supporting systems, plus mounts, cooling and a transmission setup that fit your vehicle. It’s a big project. If you’re planning one, ask whether we have a Duramax L5P engine for sale with its computer and harness from the same donor, and check the rules on swaps and emissions where you live before you start.

- Change the fuel filter and prime the fuel system.
- Refill and bleed the cooling system with the correct coolant.
- Prime the oil system before first start.
- Check the DPF and SCR system. A clogged filter will cause trouble for a healthy engine.
- Have the truck checked with a proper scan tool after install so any relearns are done.
Do the install right and your Duramax L5P engine for sale will give you years of hard work.
When Your Engine Arrives
Inspect the crate before you sign for it. If anything is damaged, take photos before it’s moved and note it on the delivery receipt. Check the engine against the list on your quote and keep it covered and dry until it goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What years is the L5P Duramax?
2017 and later Silverado and Sierra HD pickups.
Does the L5P have a CP4 pump?
No. It uses the Denso HP4, which has a much better record.
Will a 2018 engine fit my 2024 truck?
Not as a straight swap. The 2024 update changed the turbo, fuel parts and calibration. Match the year.
Does your Duramax L5P engine for sale include injectors?
Complete engines usually do. Their condition goes on the quote.
How many miles will an L5P last?
With clean air, clean fuel and regular maintenance, 300,000 miles or more is realistic. Dust, overheating and contaminated fuel are what usually end them early.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes, and we handle the export paperwork.
Is the L5P better than the LML?
For most owners, yes. It makes more power and the HP4 pump has a much better record than the LML’s CP4.
How do I pay?
Bank transfer only. The details come with your quote.
How do I get a quote?
Send your VIN through our contact page, call +1 (209) 733-0882, or WhatsApp +1 209 690 5983.
