This is a Mercedes OM651 engine for sale in fairly used condition: a complete 2.1 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, taken out of a donor vehicle, inspected and ready to ship anywhere in the world. The OM651 went into more Mercedes models than almost any diesel they built, from the C-Class and E-Class to the Sprinter van, so it is one of the most requested engines we sell.

Send us your VIN and we will match the Mercedes OM651 engine for sale to your vehicle before you pay. The OM651 comes in longitudinal and transverse versions, and they are not the same engine on the outside.

Which Vehicles Use the OM651?

The list is long. The Mercedes OM651 engine for sale here is the same family that went into:

  • C-Class: C200 CDI, C220 CDI, C250 CDI, C220d, C250d (W204, W205)
  • E-Class: E200 CDI, E220 CDI, E250 CDI, E220 BlueTEC (W212)
  • GLK 200 CDI, GLK 220 CDI, GLK 250 CDI
  • ML 250 BlueTEC and GLE 250d
  • SLK 250 CDI
  • A, B, CLA and GLA 200 CDI and 220 CDI (transverse version)
  • Mercedes Sprinter 2.1 four-cylinder models
  • Vito and Viano 2.1 diesels
  • Infiniti Q50 2.2d and Q30 2.2d

Car, van or crossover, tell us the model and year, or better yet send the VIN, and we will confirm which Mercedes OM651 engine for sale fits.

Longitudinal vs Transverse

Rear-wheel-drive cars and the Sprinter use the engine mounted lengthways. The A-Class, B-Class, CLA, GLA and the Infiniti Q30 use it sideways. The core of the engine is shared, but the mounts, sump, ancillaries and turbo arrangement are different. Ordering the wrong layout is the most common mistake we see on this engine, so we always ask.

Why the OM651 Is Worth Buying Used

It is economical, it pulls well from low revs, and parts are easy to find almost everywhere. Fleet operators like it in the Sprinter because it does a lot of work for little fuel. Car owners like it because a C220 or E220 with the OM651 is cheap to run and still has enough torque to feel quick on the road.

A good Mercedes OM651 engine for sale is also one of the cheaper ways to get a Mercedes or a Sprinter back to work. Compared to a new engine, the saving is large.

Common Problems on a Mercedes OM651 Engine for Sale

  • Piezo injectors on early engines. Some early engines had piezo injectors that were recalled and replaced. Later engines use solenoid injectors. Ask which type yours has.
  • Injector seals. A leaking seal lets combustion gas out and leaves black carbon around the injector. Fit new seals at install.
  • Timing chain. On high-mileage engines the chain can stretch. Listen for rattle on a cold start.
  • EGR and intake carbon. Short trips build carbon in the intake. A clean before fitting is worth it.

These are the things we look at on every Mercedes OM651 engine for sale, and the jobs to do while the engine is out.

How We Check Each Engine

Every engine we sell goes through our inspection before it ships. On the OM651 that means checking the turbo for play and oil in the intake, looking at the injectors and their seals, checking the oil and coolant, and turning the engine over by hand. We tell you what we know about the mileage and where that figure comes from. Our guides to tested used engines and low mileage used engines explain what those checks mean.

Installation Tips

  1. Confirm the layout and the version (power output, emissions level and injector type).
  2. Fit new injector seals and copper washers.
  3. Change the oil, oil filter, fuel filter and coolant.
  4. Clean or replace the EGR valve if it is heavily carbonised.
  5. Prime the fuel system properly before first start. Common-rail diesels do not like running dry.
  6. Check for leaks, scan for codes, and change the oil again after a few hundred kilometres.

The common rail system runs at very high pressure, so any work on the fuel lines should be done by someone who knows diesels.

For Sprinter and Fleet Owners

If you run vans for a living, a dead engine costs you every day the van is parked. A lot of our OM651 buyers are in exactly that spot: a Sprinter or Vito with a failed engine and work waiting. For them, a fairly used Mercedes OM651 engine for sale is usually faster and cheaper than a rebuild, which can take weeks once parts are ordered.

Fleet vans tend to do a lot of distance, so ask about the mileage and the service history on any engine you are looking at, including ours. Vans that did long highway runs are often in better shape inside than city delivery vans that did short hops all day, even with more kilometres on the clock.

What to Ask Before You Buy Any OM651

  • Is it the longitudinal or transverse version?
  • What power output and emissions level is it?
  • Piezo or solenoid injectors?
  • Single turbo or two-stage turbo?
  • What is the mileage, and where did that number come from?
  • What exactly comes with it?

We answer all of these for every Mercedes OM651 engine for sale on our site. If another seller cannot, that tells you something about how well they know the engine.

One last tip: write down the engine number from your old block before it comes out. It is stamped on the block, and having it in hand makes matching the replacement Mercedes OM651 engine for sale much quicker.
