BMW N57 engine for sale

BMW N57 Engine for Sale: 7 Essential Checks for a Great Diesel Swap

If you are hunting for a BMW N57 engine for sale, there is a good chance your diesel BMW has just let you down in an expensive way. A timing chain that snapped at the back of the engine. A spun bearing. Coolant in the oil after the EGR cooler gave up. These are not small jobs, and on a 530d or an X5 30d with plenty of life left in the body, a replacement engine is often the smartest money you can spend.

We sell tested, fairly used N57 diesel engines and ship them all over the world. Every engine comes with real photos, a written quote, a warranty, and a fit check against your car before you pay anything.

Need a price today? Send your VIN or engine code through our contact page or call +1 (209) 733-0882. You can also browse our BMW engines in the shop, or go straight to the BMW N57 Engine for Sale product page to see the price.

BMW N57 engine for sale

This page covers the specs, the versions, the cars, the known faults, how we test each BMW N57 engine for sale and how to order one.

What Is the BMW N57?

The BMW N57 is a 3.0 litre straight six turbo diesel. It arrived in 2008 in the E90 330d and replaced the much loved M57. From 2015 BMW began to replace it with the B57, starting with the new 7 Series, but the N57 stayed in many models until around 2019.

Compared with the M57, the N57 is lighter and more efficient. The block is aluminium with cast iron liners instead of the old iron block. The fuel system is a newer common rail setup running at much higher pressure. And BMW moved the timing chains to the back of the engine, next to the gearbox. That last change matters a lot when something goes wrong, and we will come back to it below.

The N57 was built in single turbo, twin turbo and even triple turbo form. That range is one reason a BMW N57 engine for sale has to be matched carefully. A 320 hp tri-turbo M50d engine and a 245 hp 530d engine look alike on a pallet, but they are not the same thing.

7 Essential Checks Before You Buy a BMW N57 Engine for Sale

1. Engine code and version

Single turbo, twin turbo or tri-turbo. Get a photo of the code. Guessing here costs real money.

2. Timing chain condition

Ask whether the chain has been checked or replaced. A rattle at start-up from the back of the engine is the sound you do not want to hear.

3. Compression test

Even numbers across all six cylinders mean healthy rings and valves.

4. Oil and coolant

No milky oil, no oil in the coolant. Coolant loss on an N57 often points to the EGR cooler.

5. Turbo play and smoke

Check for shaft play, oil in the intake and any history of heavy smoke.

6. Included parts

Turbo, injectors, high pressure pump, EGR parts, starter, alternator, harness? Get the list in writing.

7. Written warranty

Read it before you pay. Our used engine warranty page explains how ours works.

Common BMW N57 Problems

The N57 is a strong engine, but it has a few weak spots. We look for every one of them before we offer a BMW N57 engine for sale.

Timing chain wear at the rear

This is the big one. Because the chains sit at the gearbox end, the engine or gearbox has to come out to change them. Early engines in particular had chain and tensioner wear, and BMW issued updates. A chain that jumps or breaks usually means bent valves or worse. If an engine has a chain rattle, we tell you.

EGR cooler leaks

The EGR cooler can crack inside and leak coolant into the intake. You see coolant loss, white smoke and sometimes a sweet smell. BMW ran a recall on this in many markets. Check whether it was done on your car before fitting a new engine, because a bad cooler can damage a fresh one too.

Swirl flaps and intake carbon

Diesel engines with EGR collect soot in the intake. On the N57 the swirl flaps and intake ports can get heavily coated over the years. Cleaning the intake during the swap is a smart move.

Crank and rod bearings

Some engines, especially hard-worked twin turbo units, suffer bearing wear. Low oil, long service intervals and short trips make it worse. We check the oil and listen for bottom end noise on every BMW N57 engine for sale.

Diesel particulate filter

A car that only does short trips never gets hot enough for the diesel particulate filter to clean itself. The filter clogs, back pressure goes up, and the turbo and EGR system suffer. Repeated failed regenerations also thin the oil with diesel.

Injectors

Piezo injectors on early engines are expensive and do not like dirty fuel or water. Leaking or sticking injectors cause rough running and smoke.

Oil leaks

Oil filter housing gaskets, valve cover gaskets and the vacuum pump seal are the usual spots on high mileage engines.

None of this makes the N57 a bad engine. Looked after properly, they cover big distances. It just shows why it pays to buy from someone who actually checks.

How We Test Each BMW N57 Engine for Sale

  • We record the full engine code, mileage and donor car where we have it.
  • We run a compression test on all six cylinders.
  • We check the oil for coolant, metal and fuel dilution.
  • We listen for timing chain noise and check what we can of the chain and guides.
  • We check the turbo or turbos for play and oil.
  • We inspect the EGR parts and the block for leaks and cracks.
  • We photograph the engine from every side and send the photos to you.
  • We drain, cap and pack the engine for transport.

You see the actual engine before you pay. If you want another photo of the BMW N57 engine for sale you are looking at, just ask.

N57 vs M57 vs B57

The M57 is the older iron block diesel with the chain at the front. It is tough, simple and loved in many countries. If your car has one, see our BMW M57 engine for sale page or the 3.0 M57 product page.

The N57 is lighter, cleaner and more powerful, with the chain at the back. Our article on M57 vs N57 differences goes deeper into how they compare.

The B57 replaced the N57 from 2015. It is a different engine with different mounts, wiring and electronics, and it does not drop into an N57 car without a lot of work.

The easy rule is to replace like with like. If your car was built with an N57, a BMW N57 engine for sale of the same version is the cleanest swap.

Repair or Replace?

Plenty of N57 faults are repairs. A leaking EGR cooler, a tired injector or a clogged DPF can all be fixed without a new engine. But some problems make a replacement the better value:

  • A snapped or jumped timing chain with valve damage.
  • A spun bearing or a knock from the bottom end.
  • Coolant in the oil after overheating, with a warped head or cracked block.
  • Low compression across several cylinders.
  • Damage after a turbo failure sent debris into the engine.

Send us the symptoms and any workshop report. We will tell you straight whether a BMW N57 engine for sale is worth it for your car.

Used, Rebuilt or Remanufactured?

Fairly used engines come from running cars and are tested before sale. They are the cheapest and fastest way back on the road.

Rebuilt engines get new bearings, rings, gaskets and usually a new timing chain set. They cost more but start fresh.

Remanufactured engines are built to a fixed standard and cost the most. Our guide to remanufactured vs rebuilt engines explains the options.

For most 530d, 330d and X5 owners, a clean used BMW N57 engine for sale is the best balance of price and risk.

Long Block or Complete Engine?

A long block is the bare engine core: block, crank, pistons, head and cams. It suits you if your turbo, injectors, pump and EGR parts are healthy.

A complete engine includes the turbo, injectors, high pressure pump, intake and most bolt-on parts. It is quicker to fit and is what most workshops prefer. Each quote for a BMW N57 engine for sale says clearly which one it is.

What a BMW N57 Engine for Sale Costs

We price each engine on its own merits. The main things that change the price:

  • Version: single, twin or tri-turbo
  • Mileage and condition
  • Long block or complete engine
  • Included parts like turbos and injectors
  • Shipping method and destination

Send your engine code and we will price the matching BMW N57 engine for sale, shipping included. Our article on replacement engine cost helps you plan the full job.

Worldwide Shipping

We ship to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and the Pacific, the Caribbean, and North, Central and South America. Sea freight is the cheaper choice for most people. Air freight is quicker when the car is needed fast.

Every BMW N57 engine for sale is drained, capped, strapped down and packed on a pallet or in a crate, then sent with tracking and export paperwork. Our shipping policy has the details.

Installation Advice

  • Find out why the old engine died and fix the cause first.
  • Check the EGR cooler recall status and replace the cooler if in doubt.
  • Clean or replace the intercooler and pipes if the old turbo failed.
  • Check the DPF. A blocked filter will choke a fresh engine.
  • Fit new fuel filters and use clean diesel.
  • Use the oil BMW specifies for diesel engines with a DPF.
  • Make sure the DME software suits the engine version.

Do this and your BMW N57 engine for sale from us should give years of good work.

Looking After Your N57

Change the oil sooner than the long interval in the computer, especially if the car does short trips. Take the car on a proper run on the highway now and then so the DPF can regenerate. Let it warm up before using full power, and let it idle for a short moment after hard driving so the turbos can cool. Watch the coolant level. These simple habits keep a BMW N57 engine for sale going long after it is fitted.

When the Engine Arrives

  • Take photos of the crate before opening it.
  • Match the engine number to the quote.
  • Check every listed part is there.
  • Turn the engine by hand.
  • Tell us within the time on your quote if anything is wrong.

A Word on Tuned Engines

The N57 responds very well to a remap, and plenty of cars out there have been tuned. That is not a problem on its own, but big power without supporting changes puts extra load on the bearings, the turbo and the clutch or gearbox. When we source a BMW N57 engine for sale, we look for signs of heavy tuning such as removed DPF parts, oversized pipes or aftermarket software notes, and we tell you if we find them.

If you plan to tune your replacement engine, start with a healthy stock unit, keep the oil fresh and go easy until it has a few thousand kilometres on it. A sensible tune on a good BMW N57 engine for sale is fine. A wild tune on a tired one is how engines end up on our pallets in the first place.

Running an N57 in Hot or Dusty Countries

Many of our buyers drive in places where it is hot most of the year, the roads are dusty and diesel quality changes from one station to the next. The N57 copes with this, but it needs a little more care.

  • Change the air filter more often than the book says.
  • Fit a good water separating fuel filter and drain it regularly.
  • Keep the radiator and intercooler fins clean so the engine does not run hot.
  • Shorten the oil change interval.

Follow these points and a BMW N57 engine for sale from us will handle heat, dust and long distances without fuss.

Notes for Workshops and Importers

If you run a garage or import engines, we can quote several units at once and combine them in one shipment to keep freight costs down. Tell us the engine codes you see most often and we will look out for them. Many of our trade buyers order a BMW N57 engine for sale alongside M57 and N55 units for the same container. We send photos and test notes for each engine so you can pass them on to your own customers with confidence, and every BMW N57 engine for sale in a trade order is labelled with its code and quote number.

Right here. Every BMW N57 engine for sale we ship comes with a written warranty, and the terms are on your quote before you pay.

How do I know which BMW N57 engine for sale fits my car?

Send us your VIN and engine code. We check them against the BMW N57 engine for sale we have in stock and confirm the match in writing before we quote. If no BMW N57 engine for sale in stock is a true match, we tell you and keep looking.

Is the N57 better than the M57?

It is lighter and more powerful, with better economy. The M57 is simpler and has its chain at the front. Both are good engines when looked after.

Can a 330d engine go in a 335d?

Not as a simple swap. Single and twin turbo engines use different turbos, pistons, pipes and software.
