If you’re searching for a Nissan YD25 engine for sale, your Navara, Pathfinder or NP300 is most likely parked up waiting. Maybe the timing chain rattled for months and finally jumped. Maybe the engine kept dropping into limp mode until it just gave up. Or maybe it overheated on a long haul and now it’s pushing coolant and smoke. These are hard-working vehicles, and the rest of the truck is usually worth saving. A good replacement engine gets it back to work for a lot less than a new ute.
We’re NJ Global Auto Parts. We sell used and rebuilt engines and ship them all over the world, and the YD25 is one of the Nissan diesels we’re asked about most often. This page is what we’d tell you if you rang us about a Nissan YD25 engine for sale: the specs, which vehicles use it, what we test, what fails, what it costs, how shipping works and what your mechanic should do when it goes in.
Plain talk. No padding. If you only want a price, skip down to the ordering section near the end.
What You’re Buying With a Nissan YD25 Engine for Sale
The YD25 is Nissan’s 2.5 litre four cylinder diesel. The version most people mean is the YD25DDTi, a common rail turbo diesel with twin overhead cams and 16 valves. It took over from older engines like the QD32 and ZD30 in many Nissan light trucks and became the main diesel in the D40 Navara and R51 Pathfinder.
It has a cast iron block and an aluminium head, and later high-output versions use a variable nozzle turbo. It’s smooth for a four cylinder diesel, it pulls well from low revs and it’s reasonably economical. It does have a few weak spots, which we’ll cover, but a healthy YD25 does a lot of work for a long time. That’s why so many owners look for a Nissan YD25 engine for sale rather than giving up on the vehicle.

For background on the engine family, the Nissan YD engine page lists the versions. For buying, your VIN and engine number tell us more than anything online.
Nissan YD25 Engine for Sale: Full Specifications
These are the figures buyers ask for most when they enquire about a Nissan YD25 engine for sale. Outputs changed a lot between versions and markets, so treat them as close guides.
| Engine code | YD25DDTi (common rail turbo diesel) |
| Layout | Inline 4 cylinder diesel |
| Displacement | 2,488 cc (2.5 litres) |
| Bore x stroke | 89 mm x 100 mm |
| Valvetrain | DOHC, 16 valves |
| Fuel system | High-pressure common rail, direct injection |
| Turbo | Fixed geometry on lower output versions, variable nozzle on high output versions |
| Compression ratio | Around 15:1 to 16.5:1 depending on version |
| Power | Around 98 kW on lower versions, 128 kW in the D40 and R51, up to about 140 kW in later versions |
| Torque | Around 304 Nm on lower versions, 403 Nm in the D40 and R51, up to about 450 Nm in later versions |
| Block | Cast iron |
| Cylinder head | Aluminium |
| Cam drive | Timing chains |
| Production | Early 2000s onward |
The big spread in output is why matching the right version matters. A low-output engine in a vehicle that expects the high-output one will feel flat and may throw codes.

Turbos, sumps, wiring, ECUs and emissions parts vary between these vehicles and years. When you ask about a Nissan YD25 engine for sale, send your VIN and tell us the model, the year and whether it’s manual or automatic.
High Output or Standard Output?
This is the most important thing to get right. The YD25 came in several states of tune. The D40 Navara and R51 Pathfinder mostly use the 128 kW version. Later D40s from around 2010 and many D23s use higher output versions with different turbos and software. Vans and some pickups use lower output versions.
The blocks look similar, but turbos, injectors, ECUs and some sensors differ. Matching like with like is the easiest path. If you want to upgrade from a lower to a higher output engine, it can be done, but plan the wiring and ECU first. Tell us what you have and what you want, and we’ll find the right Nissan YD25 engine for sale.
How the YD25 Drives Day to Day
A healthy 128 kW YD25 in a D40 Navara is a nice thing to drive. It pulls cleanly from low revs, cruises quietly at highway speed and doesn’t feel short of breath with a moderate load. The later 140 kW versions are noticeably stronger again.
A tired one feels very different. Flat spots, smoke on acceleration, limp mode on hills and a rattle every cold morning. Most owners who replace a worn engine are surprised by how much better the truck feels afterwards. It’s the same vehicle, just with the life put back into it.
2WD or 4WD, Manual or Automatic
The core YD25 is shared across many models, but what bolts to it isn’t. Four wheel drive vehicles may use a different sump and oil pickup to clear the front axle. Manual and automatic vehicles use different flywheels or flexplates and sometimes different sensors. Vans and cab-chassis trucks have their own accessory layouts.
When the engine is matched properly, none of this is a problem. Your mechanic can usually move the sump, flywheel and brackets across from your old engine. Just tell us your drive type and gearbox so we can get it right first time.
Replace or Repair? What Makes Sense on a YD25
Some YD25 problems are fixable in the vehicle. A sticking turbo actuator, a dirty MAF sensor or a clogged EGR valve won’t need an engine swap. But some faults are expensive enough that a replacement makes more sense.
A jumped timing chain with valve damage, a run-low-on-oil bearing failure or a warped head after overheating all push the repair bill high. Add machining and new injectors, and the gap between fixing your old engine and buying a tested Nissan YD25 engine for sale gets small. A replacement also comes with a warranty. Get both quotes and compare them honestly.
Used, Rebuilt or Long Block
Used engine
A used YD25 comes from a running vehicle. It’s the most affordable option. We test it before it ships and tell you what we know about its history.
Rebuilt engine
A rebuilt YD25 has new bearings, rings, seals and gaskets, and ideally new timing chains, guides and tensioners. It costs more, but it takes the biggest YD25 worry off the table.
Long block or complete
A long block is the block, crank, pistons and head. A complete Nissan YD25 engine for sale includes more of the bolt-on parts like injectors, pump, turbo and manifolds. Our guide on rebuilt vs used engines explains the trade-offs.
7 Checks We Make on Every Nissan YD25 Engine for Sale
- Compression test. All four cylinders, strong and even.
- Timing chain noise. We listen for rattle on start-up, the YD25’s best known warning sign.
- Oil condition. No metal, no coolant, no burnt smell.
- Turbo condition. Shaft play, oil in the intake and actuator movement on variable nozzle turbos.
- Injector and rail condition. Signs of leaks or tampering.
- External leaks. Rear main, sump, front cover and rocker cover.
- Engine number and photos. You see the actual engine before you pay.
Any engine that fails these checks doesn’t get sold as a Nissan YD25 engine for sale on our list.
Common YD25 Problems Worth Knowing
Timing chain stretch
The YD25 uses timing chains, and stretched chains are its most famous problem, especially on engines that missed oil changes. A rattle on cold start, rough running and timing codes are the early signs. Left alone, the chain can jump and cause serious damage.
Turbo and limp mode
Variable nozzle turbos can stick from carbon, and the actuator can fail. The result is low power and limp mode. A boost leak or bad MAF sensor can cause the same symptoms.
Injector wear
Common rail injectors don’t like poor fuel or water. Worn injectors cause smoke, knocking and hard starting.
EGR and intake carbon
Soot builds up in the intake and EGR valve over time, robbing power and causing faults.
Radiator cooler failure on automatic D40 and R51
On some automatic D40 and R51 vehicles, the transmission cooler inside the radiator can fail and mix coolant with gearbox fluid. That’s a gearbox problem more than an engine one, but it often comes with overheating. If your vehicle is an automatic, check this before you fit a new engine.

How to Tell Your Old Engine Is Done
Before you start shopping for a Nissan YD25 engine for sale, make sure the old one really is finished. These signs usually mean it is:
- A jumped or broken timing chain with valve damage
- Low compression on one or more cylinders
- Knocking from the bottom end
- Metal in the oil
- Coolant in the oil after overheating
- Heavy blow-by from the breather

Questions to Ask Any Seller
- Which vehicle and year did it come from?
- Is it a standard or high output version?
- What were the compression readings?
- Has the timing chain been replaced? Is there any rattle?
- Are the injectors, pump, turbo and ECU included?
- What does the warranty cover?
An honest seller of a Nissan YD25 engine for sale should answer all of these without hesitation.
Inspecting a Used YD25 Yourself
If you can see an engine before buying, here’s what we’d look at:
- Under the oil filler cap. Heavy sludge means long oil change intervals, which is hard on chains.
- Around the injectors. Black tar-like deposits point to leaking injector seals.
- The turbo. Feel for shaft play and check the actuator arm moves.
- Inside the intake. Heavy carbon means a busy EGR system.
- The front timing cover. Signs it’s been opened mean someone’s been into the chains. Ask why.
Most buyers can’t check an engine in person, so we send detailed photos, the engine number and test results with every quote.
What the Kilometres Really Mean
YD25 engines come out of all sorts of vehicles. Some were family Pathfinders that did school runs. Others were mine site Navaras that never had an easy day. The odometer doesn’t always tell you which, and odometers aren’t always right.
That’s why we judge each engine on compression, oil condition, chain noise and leaks, not just claimed kilometres. When we describe a Nissan YD25 engine for sale, we tell you what we know about where it came from and what we don’t. That’s more useful than a nice-looking number.
Where to Find Your Engine Number
On most YD25 engines, the engine number is stamped on the block on the exhaust side, near the back where it meets the gearbox. It starts with YD25 followed by a serial. A photo of it, or your VIN, helps us match the right Nissan YD25 engine for sale to your vehicle.
Running Costs After the Swap
A healthy replacement resets a lot of the costs that build up around a tired engine. Fuel use drops, smoke goes, limp mode stops and you can trust the vehicle on long trips again. While the engine is out, spend a little on the water pump, thermostat, hoses, mounts and, on manuals, the clutch. It’s cheaper now than later.
A Quick Word for Workshops and Fleet Buyers
Many of our YD25 orders come from workshops, mining contractors, farms and companies running fleets of Navaras. If you need several engines, ask about trade terms. We can match specs across a fleet, hold good units for you and ship several together to cut freight. Workshops that buy a Nissan YD25 engine for sale from us regularly also get faster quotes.
How Much Does a Nissan YD25 Engine for Sale Cost?
Prices change with stock and condition, so we don’t post fixed numbers. What affects the price:
- Used or rebuilt.
- Standard or high output version.
- Complete or long block. Injectors and turbo add a lot of value.
- Mileage and history.
- Delivery destination.

Fitting Advice for Your Mechanic
- If the chains on the replacement engine have unknown history, consider fitting a new timing kit while it’s out.
- Fit new rear main and front crank seals.
- Flush the radiator and intercooler. Old oil and debris kill turbos.
- On automatics, check the radiator’s transmission cooler for coolant mixing.
- Fit new fuel filters and drain the water trap.
- Clean or replace the EGR valve and MAF sensor.
- Prime the oil system before the first start.
- Code injectors to the ECU if needed, then clear codes and road test.
Keeping Your New YD25 Healthy
Buying a Nissan YD25 engine for sale is only half the job. To keep it running:
- Change the oil often with a good diesel oil. This is the single best thing for the chains.
- Drain the water trap and change fuel filters regularly.
- Buy fuel from busy stations.
- Keep the air filter clean.
- Let it idle briefly after hard work so the turbo cools.
- Listen for chain rattle on cold starts and act early.
YD25 vs ZD30 vs YS23: Which Engine Fits?
The ZD30 is the older 3.0 litre diesel used in Patrols and some Navaras. The YS23 is the newer 2.3 litre twin-turbo diesel in later Navaras. Neither is a drop-in replacement for a YD25 without major work. For a YD25 vehicle, another YD25 of the right version is the answer. If you own the other engines, see our Nissan ZD30 guide and YS23DDTT guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the YD25 a reliable engine?
It can be, if the oil is changed on time and the fuel is clean. Timing chains are the main weakness on neglected engines.
Will a Pathfinder YD25 fit my Navara?
Often, since both used similar versions, but sumps, brackets and wiring can differ. Ask us first.
Can I put a high output engine in an older D40?
It’s possible but needs the right ECU and wiring. Talk to us before you commit.
Do you ship a Nissan YD25 engine for sale to my country?
Very likely. We ship worldwide by sea and air.
Does the engine have a warranty?
Yes. We confirm the terms in writing before you pay.
How long does delivery take?
It depends on your country and whether you choose sea or air freight. We give you an estimate with every quote and send tracking as soon as the engine leaves.
Why does my YD25 keep going into limp mode?
Common causes are a sticking turbo actuator, a boost leak, a dirty MAF sensor or a blocked EGR valve. Those can usually be fixed without replacing the engine. If compression is low or the chain has jumped, that’s a different story.
Can I buy just the head or the injectors?
Sometimes. Ask us. If the rest of the engine is worn, though, a complete engine is usually better value.
Should I replace the timing chains on a used engine?
If there’s any rattle, or you don’t know their history, it’s worth doing while the engine is out.
