This is a fairly used TB48DE engine for sale: the 4.8 litre straight six petrol out of the Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU), pulled from a running vehicle, checked over and ready to ship anywhere in the world. If your Patrol 4.8 has a knock, a dropped valve or a seized bottom end, this is the straight swap that gets it back on the road.
We match the engine number and your VIN before you pay, and we send photos of the actual engine you will get. No stock photos, no guessing.

What You Get With This TB48DE Engine
A complete engine usually comes with:
- Cast iron block with crankshaft, pistons and rods
- Aluminium DOHC 24 valve cylinder head with both camshafts
- Timing chain, guides and tensioner
- Intake manifold with the throttle body and injectors
- Exhaust manifolds
- Oil pan, oil pump and front cover
- Photos, test notes and proper packing for freight
Alternators, starters, AC compressors and power steering pumps vary from engine to engine. Your quote lists exactly what is bolted to the TB48DE engine you are buying. If you only need the core, we can supply a long block for less.

Which Vehicles Take the TB48DE Engine
- Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU) 4.8 wagon, from about 2001
- Patrol Y61 short wheelbase hardtop 4.8
- Patrol Y61 Safari and Super Safari 4.8 sold in the Middle East
- Patrol Y61 4.8 pickup and cab chassis models in some markets
The older TB45 and TB42 share the family name but they are not a plug in swap. Wiring, the engine computer, sensors and some mounts differ. Send us your VIN and the number stamped on your old block and we will confirm the right TB48DE engine for your truck in writing.
Why People Keep Running the 4.8
The TB48 was never a high revving engine. It is a big, lazy straight six that makes its pull low in the rev range, which is exactly what you want in a heavy 4×4. It tows well, it idles happily in sand and mud, and it does not mind fuel that is less than perfect. A lot of Patrol owners in Australia, Africa and the Gulf would rather fit another TB48DE engine than convert to anything else, because everything on the truck was built around it.
What Fairly Used Means
The engine came out of a running vehicle, not a flood or a fire. It shows normal wear for its mileage. It has not been rebuilt and it is priced as a used engine. Anything we spot, like an oil weep at the rear main seal or a cracked exhaust stud, goes on the quote before you pay.
How We Check Every TB48DE Engine
- Record the engine number, mileage and donor vehicle where known
- Compression test on all six cylinders
- Pull the oil and look for metal, coolant or fuel
- Look through a plug hole at the pistons and bores, number 6 in particular
- Listen to the timing chain and check the tensioner
- Check the head and block for cracks, welds or past repairs
- Look for oil and coolant leaks
- Photograph the engine from every side
- Drain, cap and strap it down for transport
Known TB48 Weak Points
- Number 6 cylinder. The rear cylinder tends to run hotter than the rest. Hard towing in the heat, a tired radiator or a lean fuel mixture can burn a piston there. That is why we pay extra attention to it on every TB48DE engine we sell.
- Cooling. Radiators, fans and thermostats need to be in good shape. This engine does not forgive overheating.
- Exhaust manifold studs. They can snap or leak after years of heat cycles.
- Timing chain noise. High mileage engines with poor oil history can get a rattle from worn guides.
- Oil leaks. Rocker cover gasket and rear main seal are the usual spots.
- Coil packs and injectors. Misfires are common on older engines and usually cheap to fix.
Price and What Changes It
The price shown is for a complete, fairly used TB48DE engine. The final price can move with:
- Mileage and model year
- Complete engine or long block
- What ancillaries are included
- Shipping method and where it is going
Engine, parts and freight are listed separately on your quote. If you are still adding up the whole job, our guide to replacement engine cost helps you plan labour and extras.
Complete Engine or Long Block?
A complete engine comes with the intake, injectors and manifolds and is the quickest to fit. A long block is the block and head only. If your own intake, sensors and injectors are good, a long block TB48DE engine saves money.
Used, Rebuilt or Remanufactured?
This listing is a fairly used engine. It is the fastest and cheapest way back on the road. A rebuild normally adds new bearings, rings, gaskets and a chain kit. Remanufactured costs the most. Our page on remanufactured vs rebuilt engines explains the difference in plain terms.
Before You Fit It
- Work out what killed the old engine. If it was heat, fix the cooling first.
- Fit a new thermostat and check the radiator and fan clutch.
- Replace the spark plugs and check the coil packs.
- Change the oil and filter before first start, then again after a short run in.
- Prime the oil system by cranking with the fuel pump fuse out.
- Check for fault codes once it is running and up to temperature.
Looking After It
- Change the oil about every 5,000 to 7,500 km, sooner if you tow or drive on dusty roads.
- Keep an eye on the temperature gauge, especially on long climbs with a trailer.
- Run good fuel and do not ignore a misfire.
- Clean the air filter often if you drive off road.
Treat it like that and a TB48DE engine will do a lot of kilometres.
