The BMW M62 engine is a powerful and reliable V8 engine that has been used in a variety of BMW vehicles since the mid-1990s. It is a 4.4-liter, 32-valve, double overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine that produces up to 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The M62 was designed to be an efficient and reliable powerplant for luxury vehicles, and it has become one of the most popular engines in the BMW lineup.
The M62 was first introduced in 1995 as a replacement for the aging M60 V8 engine. It was designed to be more powerful and efficient than its predecessor, while still providing the same level of reliability. The M62 featured an aluminum block with cast iron cylinder liners, as well as four valves per cylinder and dual overhead camshafts (DOHC). The engine also featured variable valve timing (VVT) on both intake and exhaust valves, which allowed for improved fuel economy and performance.

The M62 was initially available in two different versions: the standard version which produced 282 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, and the higher performance version which produced 310 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. Both versions were available with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The higher performance version was also available with a six-speed manual transmission.
In 1999, BMW introduced an updated version of the M62 called the “M62TU” (Technical Update). This new version featured several improvements over the original design including increased displacement (4.4 liters), increased compression ratio (10:1), revised camshaft profiles, revised intake manifold design, revised exhaust system design, improved oil cooling system, improved fuel injection system, revised ignition system, revised valvetrain components, and improved electronic control unit (ECU). This new version produced up to 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.
The BMW M62 engine has proven itself to be an incredibly reliable powerplant over its long production run. It has been used in numerous BMW models including the 5 Series E39/E60/F10/G30/G31/G32/G38/G11/G12/G14/G15/G16; 6 Series E63/E64; 7 Series E38; 8 Series E31; X5 E53; Z3 E36; Z4 E85; Z8 E52; X6 F16; X7 G07; i3 I01; i8 I12; 5 GT F07; 6 GT G32; 7 GT G11/G12; 8 GT G14/G15/G16; X2 F39; X3 G01 ;X4 F26 ;X5M F85 ;X6M F86 ;and Z4M E86 .
